Arsene Wenger says that Arsenal will sign a new player during the current transfer window.
The London club has shown glimpses of ability this season, but mired in sixth place on the Premier League log- 19 points behind leaders Manchester United- their league trophy drought shows no sign of abating.
The brief moments of euphoria engendered by new players like Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla have been overwhelmed by a general sense of limpness at the Emirates, and when understated midfielder Mikel Arteta was unable to play against Manchester City last weekend, even his presence was sorely missed.
And so there have been (more) clamours from the Gunners faithful for Wenger to spend some of the club’s money in January.
Recently midfielders Mohamed Diame, Lucas Biglia and Etienne Capoeu have all been linked to Arsenal.
Wenger admits that he has been preoccupied with retaining the services of forward Theo Walcott. But that with Walcott’s contract negotiations seemingly nearing a positive outcome, the Frenchman will now turn his attention to reinforcements.
"We are working very hard," Wenger said.
"First of all we want to sort out the injuries we have, and we are trying very hard to close the deal with Walcott. Once we have done that, we will certainly do something else. At the moment I cannot tell you more.
"It has become more difficult for one simple reason: we have a good squad. I know we swim against the stream a bit because people don't believe that. I say we have a very good squad. We have some improvements to make and we know exactly where.
"In January it is difficult to find the players that are really better and can give something special to the squad. The number is right. We have a good balance. We are working very hard to find what we want."
What type of player do you think Wenger most needs to buy in order to strengthen Arsenal’s line-up?
