Arsenal maintained their place at the top of the English Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta was both the hero and villain on the day as he slotted a penalty just after the break to give them the lead before being sent off and leaving his team under pressure. Olivier Giroud would go on to make the result safe late on though.
The first-half proved to be a tight affair with the Gunners struggling for clear-cut chances while the Eagles would have been upset not to have at least buried one of theirs.
Barry Bannan was particularly lively and curled a decent effort just wide while South African midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi powered a header wide of the post. The Bafana Bafana man played a key role alongside Mile Jerdinak in keeping the dangerous Arsenal midfield contained.
Arsenal had a few chances in the first period with Santi Cazorla drilling a shot wide while Aaron Ramsey was denied by Julian Speroni.
Serge Gnabry was fouled then by Adlene Guedioura after the break as the Gunners earned a penalty and Arteta made no mistake.
Marouane Chamakh, who is on loan at Palace from Arsenal, was then hauled down by the Spaniard who was subsequently sent off.
Wojciech Szczesny then made two crucial saves to deny Joel Ward and Jedinak before Giroud buried a cross from Ramsey late on to secure the spoils.
