Gunners Hold On At Sunderland

Arsenal saw out a 1-0 win away to Sunderland on Saturday despite being cut down to 10 men in the second-half.

The Black Cats had an early chance when Alfred Ndiaye got onto a cross into the area but he was unable to connect with the ball properly and the chance was gone.

Theo Walcott then had a chance at the other end after finding space on the right of the area but he sent his shot straight at Simon Mignolet.

Olivier Giroud dragged a shot inches wide in the 18th minute before Jack Wilshere slid Aaron Ramsey through but Mignolet made a great save to deny the midfielder.

Arsenal would finally beat the Sunderland stopper in the 35th minute when Wilshere drove through midfield before laying the ball off to Santi Cazorla who thumped a low strike home.

Walcott drilled a shot just wide eight minutes later before Ramsey was denied from close range by the excellent Mignolet.

Sunderland showed more purpose after the break but Giroud had the first chance as he fired just wide before Steven Fletcher lashed a shot off target at the other end.

Cazorla fizzed a shot past the post in the 61st minute but the advantage would swing in favour of the Black Cats a minute later as Carl Jenkinson received his second yellow card and was sent off.

Sunderland piled on the pressure but Arsenal continued to create chances with Cazorla sending a volley over the crossbar before Walcott hit the post with a dinked effort.

Fletcher would be denied by a fantastic save from Wojciech Szczesny before the stopper pulled off another spectacular effort to keep out Fletcher's header in the 85th minute

Titus Bramble somehow failed to convert from five yards out with four minutes to go while Szczesny was worked again in stoppage time as Arsenal held on for the win.
