Gundogan Won't Quit Dortmund Yet

Borussia Dortmund are not breathing easy over Robert Lewandowski, as they steel themselves to lose multi-millions by forcing him to see out his contract at the club.

And they already wheezed in shock when Mario Gotze winded them by agreeing to join rivals Bayern Munich.

And so the Champions League runners-up will breathe a deep sigh of relief, after Ilkay Gundogan committed himself to their cause for at least one more season.

Dortmund have grown accustomed to losing a star to a major European rival each season. But after surrendering their Bundesliga and German Cup crowns to Bayern, as well as losing to them in the Champions League final, the thought of shedding three top players must have been too harsh to bear.

22-year-old attacking midfielder Gundogan has become one of Dortmund’s best players.

His silky skills have seen him linked to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Arsenal of late, and there is no doubt that other top clubs will continue to monitor his services.

But Dortmund are not yet ready to allow Gundogan to follow Gotze, and Shinji Kagawa before him, out of their midfield.

Fortunately for the swashbuckling team in yellow, Gundogan says he sees his near future at the Westfalenstadion.

“I am very, very happy here. We have developed a lot, and I know that it will continue and will even get better,” Gundogan said, according to Soccernet.

“I will definitely play for BVB next season. We will see how it will continue after that.”

Personally, last season was a cumulative high for Gundogan, who has become a regular German international thanks to his exploits for Dortmund.

But even though he scored his team’s consolation goal in their 2-1 Champions League final defeat to Bayern, he remains emotionally raw after the painful events at Wembley.

And Gundogan says he remains determined to win the Champions League in the future.

“I had wished to be part of a game like that as spectator in the stadium – and then I was on the pitch and playing for the trophy,” he said.

“It has never been more emotional. If you are in such a final, you want to win it. My dream lives on. We will work hard to return to the final soon, and then we will win that thing.”
