A brace from Olivier Giroud secured a 2-0 victory for Arsenal against Southampton at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
Arsenal nearly took the lead in the 10th minute as Jack Wilshere weaved his way into the box but the midfielder's audacious chip bounced off the upright.
In the 17th minute the upright came to Southampton's rescue again, as Mesut Ozil managed to pick out Aaron Ramsey, who's instinctive flick managed to hit the post
20 minutes gone and Saints' keeper Arthur Boruc was involved in a moment of madness, as he got dispossessed by Olivier Giroud in the box and the striker finshed into an empty net.
The Saints' first chance came in the 32nd minute, as Adam Lallana's volley on the edge of the box was tipped over the bar by Wojciech Szczesny.
In the 40th minute Szczesny was tested again, after Jay Rodriguezís fine first touch was followed up by a scissor-kick but the Gunners' number one was equal to the effort.
Southampton finally managed to create a chance in the 74th minute, as substitute Danny Osvaldo brushed off a couple challenges on his way to the penalty area but his low strike failed to trouble Szczesny.
Olivier Giroud sealed the three points in the 85th minute, after Per Mertesacker had been fouled by Jose Fonte in the box and the Frenchman converted the spot kick, to grab his and Arsenal's second on the night.
