Ghana Steal Win

A last minute goal from Ebenezer Assifuah, his second of the night, in extra time saw Ghana beat Chile 4-3 in a 2013 FIFA U20 World Cup quarterfinal match at the Ali Sami Yen Arena in Istanbul on Sunday night.

Ghana had to come from behind twice, once in regular time which ended 2-2 and once in extra time, to eventually win the match.

It was a spirited performance form the Africans who showed true fight and grit to get back in the match on two separate occasions and then go on to win it.

Ghana, though, certainly started the better of the two teams and took the lead in the 11th minute as Moses Odjer scored one of the goals of the tournament, initially controlling it beautifully before firing the ball home from 16-yards out, 1-0.

Chile, however, were not to be outdone and quickly hit back, Nicolas Castillo finding the equaliser in the 23rd minute as he scored form a tight angle after being played through on goal by Christian Bravo, 1-1.

Four minutes later and Chile had managed to turn the tie around as Angelo Henriquez grabbed his first of two goals on the night with a low stinging 20-yard shot into the bottom corner, 2-1.

The game continued to go to and fro as neither team really took command of the match.

Ghana, however, did find an equaliser in the 72nd minute as Assifuah latched onto the end of a Clifford Aboagye cross to tap home, 2-2.

The match ended all square after 90 minutes.

Extra time certainly did not disappoint as both sides went for the win instead of settling for the lottery of a penalty shootout.

Chile were first to draw blood as Henriquez gave the South Americans the lead eight minutes into extra time with a cleverly placed header, 3-2.

Ghana, though, fought back for the second time on the night and levelled matters again in the 113th minute as Seidu Salifu beat the off side trap and made no mistake when one-on-one with the keeper, producing a clinical finish, 3-3.

Then, in the dying seconds of extra time, Ghana stole victory as a disastrous breakdown in communication on Chile’s goalline allowed Assifuah’s tame bouncing header to sneak into the net, 4-3.
