Ghana beat Lesotho 2-0 at the Setsoto Stadium in Maseru, Lesotho, on Sunday.
After Zambia drew 1-1 with Sudan on Saturday, Ghana knew that a win would be enough to take them to the top spot in the group.
They faced a Lesotho team that had not won any of their games in the qualifiers.
The first half saw several chances for the Ghanaians, but a mixture of resolute defending and some wasteful finishing kept the scoresheet level.
It took until just before the end of the half for the first goal to come. Christian Twasam Atsu found the back of the net on 45 minutes to give the Black Stars the lead going into the break.
The second half saw fewer chances initially. Asamoah Gyan finally grabbed the second goal on 75 minutes, which proved to be the final goal in the match.
The 2-0 win takes Ghana to 12 points from their five games, one ahead of Zambia
