Gerrard To Skipper Reds For 400th Time

Steven Gerrard will captain Liverpool for the 400th time on Monday night, when the table-topping Reds take on their manager’s old side Swansea in the Premier League.

It is a testament to Brendan Rodgers that Gerrard has attained a new lease on life since the Ulsterman arrived to plot the future at Anfield.

In Gerrard, Rodgers inherited a talismanic and inspirational leader, but one who had spent the large part of his latter career on the treatment table.

Last season however, Stevie G was a virtual ever-present in the Liverpool line-up until late on in the campaign, and he looks set to stretch his playing days late into his 30s.

Rodgers must take some of the credit for masterminding Gerrard’s vital longevity, and has explained exactly how he has done it, with a tailor-made fitness regime to get the best out of Liverpool’s greatest-ever player.

"You need to analyse the people and what age he is at and the body type he is," Rodgers said.

"One of the biggest things in our method of work is the recovery method.

“Stevie for example plays on the Saturday, recovers on the Sunday doing pulls, stretch and massage, on the Tuesday recovers further with maybe a light jog. It's a long load of low intensity recovery. Stevie was fit enough to play Saturday, Tuesday and Sunday at the start of this season.

"He has moderate to low intensity recovery programmes. We have individual plans for every player in terms of getting them through the games."

Meanwhile, Rodgers has gained further credit for Liverpool’s fine start to the season.

He has been voted the Premier League’s manager of the month for August, and Daniel Sturridge- the striker he rescued from the bench at Chelsea- has been voted the first player of the month for the season.
