Dortmund Win German Super Cup

Borussia Dortmund beat bitter rivals Bayern Munich 2-0 to clinch the Germany Super Cup on Wednesday night.

The match started at high tempo because of the high rivalry between the two teams, with former Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski, adding some spice to the clash as he now dons the red and blue of Bayern.

Bayern seemed to settle into their shape and enjoying a bit of possession to exert some control on the game within the opening 15 minutes of the match, but Dortmund were looking resilient.

The Pep Guardiola’s side were forced to shift their play with long diagonals, which Jurgen Klopp’s side were happy to deal with.

Javier Martinez heavy back passes early in the game nearly resulted in an own goal, but goalkeeper Manuel Neuer came to the rescue of the Spanish defender.

Shortly afterwards Dortmund started to dictate the match as Bayern looked a bit frail at the back.

Dortmund broke the deadlock through Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the 23rd minute following a good play with strike partner, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, for the opening goal of the match.

The opening half hour did not quite go according to plan for Bayern, while Dortmund were able to ruffle the Bundesliga champions' feathers and take the lead through Mkhitaryan

The were also dealt a blow as defender, Javier Martinez, had to make way for Dante after suffering an injury.

The match headed to the halftime break with Bayern behind.

Dortmund continued to dominate in the second half and were rewarded with the second goal as Aubameyang found the back of the in the 62nd minute following an assist from Piszczek.

Lewandowski, playing against his former team, failed to make any impact, and had to deal with the disappointment of losing to his former teammates.

Guardiola brought in World Cup stars Phillip Lahm and Mario Gotze, but they could not help their team avoid a painful loss to their bitter rivals, who clinch the Super Cup.
