Palermo’s president Maurizio Zamparini has once again lived up to his nickname ‘The Manager Eater’.
And this time the manager he has chewed up and spat out is none other than former AC Milan and Italy star, Gennaro Gattuso.
The combustible former midfielder has been sacked by Palermo following a string of poor results in the Serie B.
Gattuso has been attempting for further his career in football as a manager, first at Swiss club Sion, and latterly at Palermo.
But he lasted just four months in the hot-seat, before falling to Zamparini’s comically twitchy trigger finger.
"It's with great sadness that I write to say that I have relieved Gennaro Gattuso of his duties as first-team manager," Zamparini told Palermo’s official website.
"Unfortunately for both me and him, we might have bitten off a little bit too much for his first experience as manager, at a club with a demanding public like Palermo's. Results have shown that we were wrong (to offer Gattuso the job)."
Zamparini has now sacked almost 30 managers during his stint as president of Palermo.
Last season he hired and fired three managers as Palermo suffered relegation, two of them twice! And only one managed to lead the team out for more than five matches at a time.
It remains to be seen if Gattuso can earn another manager’s job elsewhere, or if he has become the latest example of how good players do not always make successful managers.
