The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) has named former Barcelona manager, Gerardo Martino, as the new head coach of their national team.
“Rosario born coach Gerardo Daniel Martino, will take over as the new coach of the national team, succeeding Mr. Alejandro Sabella, who has fulfilled its contract with AFA after the end of the World Cup Brazil 2014,” read a statement on the AFA official website.
Martino, who has managed several South American club teams, has also served as Paraguay’s head coach, with whom he reached a Copa America final and World Cup quarter finals.
Outside of South America, he is best known for his stint as Barcelona manager last season. He won the Spanish Super Cup but failed to celebrate win a major trophy for the first time since 2007/08 and left Camp Nouby mutual consent.
Martino takes over from Alejandro Sabella, who was able to lead Argentina to the World Cup final this summer, in Brazil, where they lost 1-0 to Germany in extra-time.
Martino has signed a four-year contract until the 2018 World Cup in Russia and will officially be presented by the AFA on Thursday.
