The 40-year-old Buffon announced his retirement after Italy's shock defeat to Sweden in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-offs, which ultimately saw them fail to qualify for the tournament.

However, Luigi Di Biagio, Italy's caretaker coach, has since revealed that he expected Buffon to rethink his decision, which the goalkeeper eventually did, making himself available for the Azzurri's matches against Argentina and England in March.

"I feel a sense of responsibility at this time of transition for our national team," Buffon told Italia 1's Tiki Taka.

"There will be two important friendly matches. I thought about going on holiday with my family, but if the national team needs me, I have to answer that I am ready and I cannot desert.

"I do this for loyalty and responsibility, without thinking about what will be my future.

"The players who have experience at the moment could be useful against Argentina and England."

Albiceleste superstar Lionel Messi retired from national team duty after losing two Copa America finals in a row against Chile. The 29-year-old then turned back on his decision two months later and revealed that it was frustration that led him to make the impulsive decision to quit.
