Fifa's New Anti-Racism Legislation

Fifa have adopted heavier sanctions for racism in football.

The organisation has received harsh criticism for the meagre fines handed out to clubs and associations after incidents of racism.

All the while, racism in football, particularly in Europe, appears to be on the rise.

Consequently, Fifa has reacted by agreeing among its member countries to implement stricter punishments for racism.

A two-stage anti-racism resolution was passed with a 99% majority at Fifa’s conference in Mauritius on Friday.

From now on, first or minor offences will be met with a warning, fine or with a match having to be played behind closed doors.

Serious or repeated instances of racism can now be punished by a deduction of points, expulsion from a tournament or even relegation of the offending club.

Furthermore, players or officials found guilty of racist abuse in any game will be banned for a minimum of five matches. The sanction had previously only applied to Fifa internationals.

Special officials will also be appointed to be present in stadia to be on the lookout for acts of racism, as an aid match officials.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter says that the new laws “send a strong signal to the racists that their time is up."

"We have been through a difficult time. It has been a test for the world of football and for those who lead it,” he added.

"There have been despicable events this year that have cast a long shadow over football and the rest of society.

"I am speaking of the politics of hate – racism, ignorance, discrimination, intolerance, small-minded prejudice.

"That uncivilised, immoral and self-destructive force that we all detest."
