FC Barcelona have confirmed that new £15 million signing Thomas Vermaelen has joined the club despite carrying a hamstring injury.
The 28-year-old completed his transfer on Sunday and admitted he was not 100 percent fit after getting injured during Belgium’s 1-0 win over Russia, which meant he just played 29 minutes in Brazil.
The former Arsenal captain said at his unveiling he hoped to ‘start from zero’ after missing most of last season with the Gunners due to a series of injuries but joined the Blaugrana as an injured player.
Some reports claimed Vermaelen injured himself in his first training session at Camp Nou, but a statement from Barcelona confirmed: "Thomas Vermaelen injured his right hamstring during the World Cup in June. The player will undergo physiotherapy, and the evolution of the injury will determine when he returns to training."
