Fabregas & Messi Hand Barca Win

A brace each from Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi saw Barcelona to a 4-0 win over Getafe in their first leg Copa del Rey Last 16 match at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

Barcelona certainly started the better of the two teams and nearly opened the scoring in the sixth minute as Rafa almost turned the ball into his own net attempting to clear a low driven cross from Alexis Sanchez.

Two minutes later, though, and Barcelona did make their early pressure pay as Fabregas headed home a cross from Pedro Rodriguez, 1-0.

After going behind Getafe pulled together and began creating a couple of chances of their own despite seeing very little of the ball.

In the 17th minute Pablo Sarabia whipped a tantalising free-kick into the box which was met by Juan Valera Espin, but his header went narrowly wide of the target.

Seven minutes later the action was at the other end as Carles Puyol met a corner-kick, but his glancing header went wide of the Getafe goal.

In the 31st minute Getafe created their second decent opening of the half as Juan Rodríguez met an in-swinging free-kick, but he saw his header superbly saved by the Barcelona keeper.

Barcelona controlled the rest of the first half possession, but they could not make their dominance count and often wasted the ball in the final third of the field.

Five minutes after the break Barcelona went within inches of finding their second goal when a cross from Pedro was deflected just wide by Alexis.

Barcelona were at it again in the 57th minute after a smart one two between Fabregas and Alexis saw the former into some space, but his shot from just inside the box was brilliantly saved by Jordi Codina.

Four minutes later and Barcelona made their second half pressure pay off when they were awarded a penalty after Pedro was brought down inside the box by Valera.

Fabregas stepped up to the spot and made no mistake, slamming the ball into the top left-hand corner, 2-0.

Getafe tried to find their way back into the match, but were unable to breach the Barcelona defence.

Instead, Lionel Messi made the score look more flattering with Barcelona’s third goal and fourth goal of the night in the 91st and 94th minute respectively.

The result sees Barcelona take a 4-0 lead into the second leg of their last 16 Copa del Rey match against Getafe.
