Arsenal Beat Wigan On Penalties To Reach FA Cup Final

Arsenal beat Wigan Athletic 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 deadlock in extra-time in the FA Cup Semi-final at Wembley on Saturday afternoon. 

Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was the hero, saving the first two penalties from Wigan.

Per Mertesacker's header eight minutes from time sent the FA Cup semi-final with Wigan Athletic into extra-time, after Jordi Gomez scored a penalty earlier.

In the fifth minute, Yaya Sanogo's header from the centre of the box was saved by Scott Carson, following a cross from Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Bacary Sagna slipped a through ball to Sanogo in the 16th minute, but Sanago was caught offside.

Santi Cazorla delivered a cross to Thomas Vermaelen in the 26th minute. Vermaelen met the cross with a header from the centre of the box that was blocked by the Wigan defense wall.

Within seconds, Sagna hit a left footed shot from the left side of the six yard box that was close but missed the top right corner, following a corner.

In the 35th minute Sanogo hit a right footed shot from outside the box that went high and wide to the right.

Three minutes later Callum McManaman unleashed a right footed shot from the right side of the box that went a bit high.

In the 39th minute Marc-Antoine Fortune hit a right footed shot from the right side of the box that was saved by Lukasz Fabianski in the centre of the goal.

James McArthur hit a right footed shot in the 54th minute from outside the box that hit the Arsenal defense line.

In the 59th minute, Per Mertesacker conceded a penalty. There was a delay that was caused by Nacho Monreal injury before the penalty could be taken.

In the 64th minute, Jordi Gomez stepped up to take the penalty. He hit the spot kick with a left footed shot that found the bottom left corner of the net. 1-0.

In the 67th minute, Sanogo hit a left footed shot from the centre of the box that should have been the equaliser, but his shot went high and wide.

Oxlade-Chamberlain unleashed a right footed shot in the 74th minute from outside the box that was saved by Scott Carson in the centre of the goal following an assist from Kieran Gibbs.

In the 82nd minute, Mertesacker made amends. He brought Arsenal back into the game with a header from close range that found the bottom right corner of the net. 1-1.

In the 90th minute, Mertesacker nearly put Arsenal ahead, but his header from the centre of the box went a bit high.

The game went into extra-time.

In the 97th minute, Sanogo hit a right footed shot from the right side of the box that was saved by Carson in the top centre of the goal.

James Perch hit a right footed shot in the 102 minute from outside the box that went high and wide to the right.

Substitute Kim Kallstrom hit a left footed shot in the 114th minute from outside the box that went just high and wide to the left. 

Two minutes later Nick Powell hit a left footed shot from outside the box that missed to the right.

The game ended 1-1 after extra-time and went to the penalties.
