Experienced Benzema Still Trumps Morata

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti says he has not lost faith in the misfiring French striker, Karim Benzema.

There are increasing calls for Ancelotti to drop Benzema in favour of the up-and-coming young striker, Alvaro Morata, who, as a substitute, did his own cause a world of good this weekend by scoring the equaliser for Los Blancos against Levante.

Morata has proved to be a handful in all of his cameo appearances for Real and he is the darling of the Bernabeu this week, after his energetic contribution paved the way for Cristiano’s Ronaldo’s late winner against Levante.

Morata has even been praised for the way he immediately grabbed the ball from the back of the net after his goal, saving precious seconds for CR7 to score his dramatic injury time winner.

Benzema has not scored for over 500 minutes for Real and for twice as long for France and the Real faithful have of late made no secret of their preference for Morata.

But while Ancelotti admits that Morata is good enough to be a first-team regular, he is still sold on Benzema’s “experience.”

“Morata could play from the start, although he does not have Benzema’s experience,” Ancelotti said.

“He is young, with enthusiasm and skill inside the area. He is important for us.”

Morata meanwhile, is not unduly impatient and won't try to force Benzema out of the starting line-up, preferring to take a mature stance when it comes to his own place in Ancelotti’s plans.

“I have one of the best forwards in the world in front of me,” Morata said.

“I am going on bit by bit, I know where I am and what I must do. I had the luck I did not get in other games.

“There is nothing else to do but keep battling to take advantage of the time I get on the pitch. I am training well and continuing to learn. When I get a chance to start I will be ready to take it.”
