Everton Down Southampton

Romelu Lukaku scored the winning goal as Everton beat Southampton 2-1 in an English Premier League match at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Everton started the more positive of the two sides and created their first chance on goal in the third minute as Ross Barkley got on the end of a Seamus Coleman cross, but his effort was well-saved by Kelvin Davis.

Six minutes later Everton made their early pressure pay off as Coleman burst into the box from the right flank, beating his marker before firing the ball into the top corner from a tight angle, 1-0.

The game tightened up after that as Southampton buckled down in defence which resulted in the next chance on goal only coming in the 37th minute for the Toffees as a swift passing move saw the ball stolen off the toes of Brian Oviedo a couple of yards out from goal. Had the pass from Romelu Lukaku found him it would certainly have been a second for Everton.

Three minutes later and Southampton created their first chance on goal as Adam Lallana beat two defenders on the edge of the Toffees box before shooting narrowly wide.

The half ended 1-0 in favour of the home side.

Everton were at it again ten minutes after the restart as Barkley met a cross from Oviedo, but his attempt from ten-yards out went inches wide of the post.

Southampton, though, were not going to go down without a fight and found the equalising goal in the 71st minute after a powerful driven 30-yard shot from Gaston Ramirez found the back of the net, 1-1.

Everton, however, were quick to respond and re-took the lead three minutes later after Lukaku found himself on the end of sweeping team move, and produced an emphatic finish from just inside the box, 2-1.

Lukaku should have put the game beyond doubt in the 81st minute when he beat three defenders on his way into the box, but fired over from close range.

Everton, though, held on for the victory and a valuable three points.
