A brace from Matias Delgado and a solitary goal from Valentin Stocker secured a 3-0 win for FC Basel over Valencia in their UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg tie at St Jakob Park.
Basel's Matias Delgado was presented with the first opportunity of the game in the 10th minute, as the midfielder strike from distance went well wide of the target.
Five minutes later and Valentin Stocker's strike from the edge of the area drew a fine save from Vicente Guita.
Guita came to Valencia's rescue three minutes later as he did well to keep out Marcelo Diaz's long range effort.
The home side threatened again in the 24th minute as Fabian Schar's strike from 35-yards out flew inches wide of the left-hand post.
The visitors registered their first effort on target in the 30th minute as Fede's effort from distance forced Yang Sommer into a fine save.
Four minutes later and Basel were ahead through Delgado's shot from the edge of the area, after the midfielder was teed up Philipp Degen.
Delgado doubled the hosts lead in the 38th minute with a composed finish from inside the area, after being picked out by Stocker.
Eduardo Vargas could have pulled one back for Valencia in the 69th minute but the midfielder failed to direct his header on target after getting on the end of Sofiane Feghouli's cross.
Valencia's Daniel Parejo tried his luck from distancein the 77th minute, as the midfielder's effort produced a fine save from Sommer.
Stocker added a third deep in stoppage time with a cool finish from close range after being set up by Fabian Frei.
