Rooney Brace Saves United

A brace from Wayne Rooney and second half goals from Juan Mata and Javier Hernandez saw Manchester United come from a goal behind to beat Aston Villa 4-1 in an English Premier League match at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

It was a poor start by United who saw themselves trailing after only 12 minutes when Ashley Westwood curled home a 24-yard free-kick, 1-0.

Five minutes later Ciaran Clark almost doubled his side’s lead when he met a cross from Marc Albrighton, but his header from ten-yards out skimmed the wrong side of the crossbar.

United, though, were not to be outdone and began putting some decent passages of play together, one of those movements resulting in the equalising goal in the 20th minute when Rooney expertly headed home a left wing cross from Mata, 1-0.

The home side continued to dictate terms after that, but they struggled to break down a resilient Villa defence.

United, though, were afforded the chance to take the lead a minute before the break when the referee awarded a penalty after Leandro Bacuna pulled down Mata inside the box.

Rooney stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to send his side in front at the break, 2-1.

The start of the second half saw Christian Benteke with two great chances to level matters, but he squandered both of them.

In the 50th minute a cross from the left was superbly controlled by the Villa man on his chest and with just the keeper to beat he fluffed his shot form six-yards out.

Three minutes later Benteke met another cross from Albrighton, but his header went inches over the target.

United made them pay for those missed opportunities in the 57th minute after Mata found his side’s third goal when he poked home a goalmouth scramble inside the Villa box, 3-1.

Rooney should have put the result beyond doubt in the 72nd minute when he beat a couple of defenders inside the box, but saw his shot from 14-yards out magnificently saved by the keeper.

Benteke missed another guilt edged chance five minutes later when he shot wide from ten-yards out after meeting a deep cross from the left.

United controlled the final passages of play and the icing on the cake was their fourth goal courtesy of Hernandez in the 90th minute, 4-1.
