Liverpool Go Top

A comprehensive performance from Liverpool combined with poor defensive errors from Tottenham Hotspur saw the Reds run out comfortable 4-0 winners in an English Premier League match at Anfield on Sunday.

The win sees Liverpool to the top of the League table with 71 points, two above second placed Chelsea.

It was a horrible start to the game for Spurs who scored an own goal in only the second minute of the match.

Glen Johnson whipped in a teasing cross and in a bizarre attempt to clear the ball Younes Kaboul back-heeled the ball into his own net, 1-0.

Liverpool took the ascendancy after that and came close to finding their second goal in the 15th minute when Philippe Coutinho volleyed inches wide from just inside the box.

Spurs suffered a further set-back in the 25th minute when Jan Vertonghen had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Michael Dawson.

A minute later Spurs found themselves two goals down thanks to another defensive mistake when Luis Suarez made the most of an error by Dawson and guided the ball home from ten-yards out.

Spurs were afforded a chance to pull a goal back in the 27th minute, but Christian Eriksen saw his shot cleared off the line by Martin Skrtel.

Spurs were lucky not to go three down four minutes before the break when Suarez struck the crossbar which saw the ball bounced on the goaline and away from danger.

Liverpool took a 2-0 lead into the break.

Liverpool started the second half on the front foot yet again and came close to scoring in the 53rd minute when Raheem Sterling broke behind the defence, but fired inches over the crossbar with just the keeper to beat.

Two minutes later Liverpool did score their third goal when Coutinho made the best of a counter-attack with a thunderous 25-yard drive that found the corner of the net, 3-0.

Jordan Henerson added to the party with Reds’ fourth goal in the 75th minute with a wickedly driven shot, 4-0.

The win saw Liverpool go top of the league table.
