Liverpool Edge Five Goal Thriller

A goal from Philippe Coutinho in the 78th minute saw Liverpool run out 3-2 winners over Manchester City in an English Premier League match at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

It was a bright start to the game by Liverpool as Coutinho dragged a 25-yard shot narrowly wide of the target in the fourth minute.

Two minutes later Raheem Sterling gave the Reds the lead when Luis Suarez slipped him through on goal and he showed great composure to beat the keeper one-on-one, 1-0.

In the 14th minute Yaya Toure had City’s first shot on goal, but he fired wide from roughly 30-yards out.

City then suffered a big set-back in the 19th minute when Yaya Toure had to leave the field with an injured groin and was replaced by Javi Garcia

Seven minutes later Steven Gerrard met a corner from Coutinho, but his header was superbly saved by Joe Hart as he tipped the effort over the crossbar from close range.

From the resulting corner Liverpool doubled their lead when Martin Skrte headed home from six-yards outs, 2-0.

City finished the half the stronger of the two teams and were unlucky not to pull a goal back in the 44th minute when David Silva headed a right wing cross from Samir Nasri                inches wide of the post.

A minute later Vincent Kompany saw his header from a corner-kick cleared off the goalline by Sterling.

The first half ended 2-0 in favour of Liverpool.

The start of the second 45 saw City doing most of the pressing and they made their pressure pay in the 57th minute when Silva turned home a James Milner cross from eight-yards out, 2-1.

City continued to press forward and restored parity in the 63rd minute when a cross from Silva was accidently deflected into his own net by Glen Johnson, 2-2.

Three minutes later only a brilliant save from Simon Mignolet kept the scores level when he denied Edin Dzeko from ten-yards out.

In the 75th minute Silva came within inches of giving City the lead after he got onto the end of a low left wing cross from Sergio Aguero, but he touched the ball wide from six-yards out.

Three minutes later Liverpool took the lead again when Coutinho made the most of some sloppy defending as he clinically fired home from 16-yards out, 3-2.

City tried to find their way back into the match, but the Liverpool defence held firm as they picked up all three points.

On a sour note for the Reds they saw Jordan Henderson sent off in the 93rd minute.
