Mata Inspires United To Victory

Juan Mata bagged a brace and set up another as Manchester United thumped Newcastle United 4-0 at St James' Park.

The win moves David Moyes' side up to sixth in the league standings, while the Magpies remain in ninth spot.

Dan Gosling could have opened the scoring just after the first minute but the Magpies' midfielder steered his header just wide of the right-hand post.

 
Chieck Tiote squandered an opportunity to give the hosts the lead in the 16th minute as he volleyed well over the bar from inside the area.
 
Papiss Cisse went for the spectacular in the 21st minute but striker's acrobatic effort from six-yards out was comfortably held by Anders Lindegaard. 
 
Cisse threatened again three minutes later as the Newcastle striker's glancing header produced a fine save from Lindegaard. 
 
The Red Devils opened the scoring with their first effort on target in the 38th minute through Juan Mata's delightful free-kick from 20-yards out.
 
Javier Hernandez almost doubled the the visitors lead just before the halftime break, the striker's placed effort from close range struck the upright, after being played in by Shinji Kagawa.
 
Four minutes after the restart and Mata doubled the United's lead with a composed finish from close range after being teed up by Hernandez.
 
Hernandez could have added a third in the 60th minute but the Mexican striker blasted over from inside the area after getting on the end of Kagawa's cross. 
 
Four minutes later and Hernandez got United's third, the striker turned home Kagawa's low driven cross to increase the visitor's advantage.
 
Cisse almost pulled a goal back for Newcastle in the 70th minute but the striker's curling effort drew a fine stop from Lindegaard.
 
Lindergaard came to the Red Devils' rescue in the 83rd minute to deny Cisse from point blank range.
 
Adnan Januzaj got United's fourth deep in stoppage time with a composed finish from close after getting on the end of Mata's clever flick.
