English Premier League Afternoon Wrap

Everton 2-1 Hull City: Former South African international Steven Pienaar made a welcome return to first-team, when he scored with his first touch to give the Toffees a deserved come from behind win at Goodison Park. The Bafana Bafana star has been out injured for the past six weeks with a hamstring injury scored after being on the field for only 30 seconds and got on the end of a Kevin Mirallas cross. The Belgium winger, whose national team had qualified for the World Cup this week, had given the hosts an eighth minute lead. Hull then replied through substitute Yannick Sagbo with 30 minutes played. Arouna Kone should have scored late on but the Ivorian crashed his shot against the upright. Pienaar’s goal was enough to give Everton all three points and move Roberto Martinez’s men up to fifth place.

Stoke City 0-0 West Bromwich Albion: Stoke and West Brom played to a dull goalless draw at the Britannia Stadium. The first-half was devoid of much clear cut chances and the result was fair to both sides that did not create enough find the back of the net. Youssouf Mulumbu was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when the Baggies player was clipped in the box by Charlie Adam, but the referee waved play on. Stephane Sessegnon who had an impressive game almost could have won it in the last minute, but he shot straight at Asmir Begovic after beating the home side’s defence.

Swansea City 4-0 Sunderland: Swansea brushed aside Sunderland at the Liberty Stadium to hand Gus Poyet a nightmare to start to his managerial career at the Black Cats. The Swans though did have to wait until the 57th minute to find the breakthrough when Rangel flicked on a De Guzman corner and the ball hit the Bardsley and go into his own net. De Guzman then curled home a beauty from outside the box, and the home side were handed a penalty soon after. Wilfred Bony stepped up to slot home the spot-kick, before Chico bundled in a header from another superb De Guzman set-piece 10 minutes from the final whistle.
