Hodgson Defends Drab England Performance

England coach, Roy Hodgson, has defended his side’s poor display against in a friendly Norway last night.

The 67-year-old said his team was “quite good” when asked about their performance after the game, in which Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Rooney became England’s 4th highest goalscorer with his goal and is now behind only Jimmy Greaves, Sir Bobby Charlton and Gary Lineker on the all-time goalscoring charts.

"This team will score goals. They'll score goals,” Hodgson told ESPN.

"Rooney will score goals. (Danny) Welbeck will score goals.”

When asked about the poor attacking quality of the team, which only managed two shots on target, Hodgson said that the statistics were biased. He then hinted that his side may play defensively in their match against Switzerland on Monday.

“Two shots on target? What about all the ones they threw themselves in front of... Don't hit me with statistics," he continued.

"When we had that much possession, and you talk about two shots on target? We're not scoring a lot of goals, but we're not playing against teams who come out against us a lot.

"Switzerland will need to beat us. If anything, we might be Norway on Monday. We might be pushed back and can't attack and dominate for long periods, as we did today."

Hodgson concluded the interview by saying that he is sure that the record-low attendance of 40,181 at Wembley is not a sign of things to come and that the players at his disposal should be able to give fans the exciting displays that they are expecting.

“The crowd aren't foolish. They know what they're seeing," he added.

"They'll come back to see (Raheem) Sterling, (Daniel) Sturridge and (Jack) Wilshere. These players have the potential to lead us forward and excite football crowds.”

England will play Switzerland in their first European Championship 2016 qualifier on Monday evening at 21:45.
