Goals by Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerard booked England’s place in next year’s World Cup in Brazil as they overcame Poland 2-0 in this final qualifier.
The hosts started off brightly at Wembley and knew that an early goal would settler their nerves and quieten down the Polish outfit.
The first clear cut chance of the game fell to Danny Welbeck, but he could not turn Leighton Baines’ cross on target.
Poland though responded well and had their first chance of the game when the ever dangerous Robert Lewandowski drove at the English defence, but his shot was tame and gathered comfortably by goalkeeper Joe Hart.
Both teams were not scared to attack one another and this meant an open game of football with England’s on-for winger Andros Townsend looking lively on the right and Polish goal machine Lewandowski always a threat.
Midway through the first-half and England seemed to have grabbed the game by the scruff of its neck, creating chance after chance.
The ever dangerous Townsend then struck the upright with a wonderful left-footed curler after cutting in from the right wing in the 27th minute.
Manchester United forward Welbeck then had a wonderful opportunity to open the scoring when he challenged for a loose ball in the box following a corner, but he could only drag his shot wide.
The Three Lions grew in confidence as the game went on, and had striker Daniel Sturridge fired wide from outside the box in the 34th minute.
The Wembley crowd could sense a goal and Wayne Rooney soon came close when he struck a fierce low drive from 20 yards out, but keeper Szczesny was up to the task and saved well.
Rooney then did however open the scoring in this qualifier when he got onto the end of a fantastic cross from left-back Baines and headed home with just under five minutes to play in the first-half.
The second-half started with Poland putting pressure on their hosts and a Lewandowski header forcing a fine save from Hart in the 47th minute, following substitute Mateusz Klich’s shot being deflected wide by centre-back Gary Cahill a minute before.
This seemed to spur the English on and they started to dominate once more as they had in the first-half.
Lewandowski had Poland’s best chance of the game in the 60th minute but Hart made himself big and prevented the striker from flicking the ball past him.
Rooney almost scored again in the 66th minute only for Szczesny to tip away his long-range strike that was bound for the far corner.
Captain Gerrard struck the decisive blow that guaranteed the three points England needed to top the group, neatly finishing past Szczesny to seal the Three Lions' place in Brazil next year.
