Thousands of people mobbed Chelsea legend Didier Drogba in Ivory Coast this weekend as they watched the African legend put his name forward for the presidency of the Ivorian Football Federation (IFF).

The former striker enjoyed a brilliant 12-year international career, scoring 65 goals in 105 matches, many of which he captained too.

Not only was Drogba loved for his contribution to the country's football, but he was widely credited for helping end Ivory Coast's civil war, that had lasted five years, after the Elephants qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

This weekend, thousands of his supporters cheered Drogba on in the city of Abidjan as he submitted his candidacy for the upcoming elections for president of the IFF.

The ex-Blues forward is one of four men running for the role, although The National believe his name is not yet confirmed to be on the ballot next month.

Speaking about his wish to lead the organisation, Drogba said: "Football is everyone's sport, football brings people together, football unites. We can see it today with all these people gathered in front of the headquarters of the Ivorian Football Federation.

"It's no secret that our football is going badly, and that is why, with my team, we are committed to contributing to the rebirth of Ivorian football.

"If my goal was not driven by a deep desire to give back to Ivorian football all that it has given me, to contribute to the development of football in my country, and if God was not in this candidacy, it would be difficult to be in front of you today."
