Dembele: Spurs Can Challenge Next Season

Tottenham Hotspur can challenge for the Premier League title next season, according to their under-rated midfield behemoth, Mousa Dembele.

The London club suffered heartache on the last day of the season, narrowly failing to qualify for the Champions League behind their hated rivals Arsenal.

But during manager Andre Villas-Boas’ first season at the club, Spurs gave a good account of themselves.

At their best, they were simply unplayable, but unfortunately failed to maintain the consistency required to mount a serious bid for the title.

Dembele was the under-stated star of the show at White Hart Lane.

Without the Belgian midfielder in their starting line-up, Spurs only managed to win one of seven games. With Dembele driving them forward, Spurs won an impressive 15 from 22 Premier League matches.

And so as their beating heart, Dembele is well-placed to talk Spurs’ chances for next season.

"I'm never shy to say that I believe in everything. So if we start well next year, you never know,” Dembele said, according to Sky Sports.

"Maybe if some good players come in, then it's a different season. There's a chance, why not?"

Spurs certainly gave England’s top teams a run for their money this season, and Dembele knows that if they can only add some attrition to their panache, a top-four challenge at least is within their reach.

 "We dropped a lot of points against the bottom teams. Against the good teams we can make the difference,” he explained.

"So maybe we have to be aware next year as well, these are the games for us that are very difficult - the small games.

"That's the thing maybe we have to look out for. Of course, that's the sign of a strong side. That's something that comes with experience as well.

"If there is a bottom team here, maybe we are too relaxed and think, 'OK, we are going to win'.

"Maybe that's the reason (we missed out on the top four). The thing is, we are close because against the top teams we are good. I think, 'They are not better than us'.

"But against the small teams, it's like, 'OK, the top teams would finish this'."
