De Gea Thanks United For Backing Him

Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea, has thanked his team-mates for helping him settle in at last.

It is hard to believe that De Gea is just 22-years-old, so long has he been in the limelight.

His critics sought to use his youth against him when he first arrived at United, and a handful of gaffes did not help with his confidence and development.

But the English champions have retained their faith in the agile Spaniard’s abilities, and while he was not flawless last season, he did play a major role in helping the Red Devils claim the Premier League title.

It was hard for De Gea when he first arrived in England as a youngster with a big reputation, but a narrow world view.

But two seasons later he feels as if he has matured, and is grateful for the backing he has received as he grows into life as Old Trafford’s primary glove man.

"It's more about all the things you learn rather than one individual thing," De Gea told United’s official website, regarding his development as the club.

"It's an ongoing process as well, especially when you come to a club from another country. The whole thing is a great experience.

"At first, everything is new. The football, the culture and how people live...it's about learning how things work at the club and getting to know your team-mates.

"The whole package has been a lesson for me. The support I have had from everyone at the club has been fantastic.

"First of all you have to have the belief in yourself and self-confidence, but that is enhanced once your team-mates and people within the club show their confidence in you and their support.

"It's a top dressing room and a great one to join.

"Everyone in the squad helps you a lot and the settling-in process is made a lot easier by the fact that there is such a warm atmosphere here."
