Whilst France football legend, Zinedine Zidane, wants his national team to face a strong opponent early in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo told Spanish newspaper Marca that he doesn’t want to meet Germany, Brazil or Spain in the group stage already.
“It wouldn’t be right if we had to play one of these big teams in the group stage already,” said Ronaldo.
In Portugal’s recent history Ronaldo and his teammates have particularly not made the best experience when facing Germany at big tournaments.
At the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany Portugal lost to the hosts in the third-place playoff.
Two years later at the EURO 2008 Germany eliminated Ronaldo’s team at the quarter final.
Finally, Germany and Portugal met in the group of death at the EURO 2012. But despite Portugal’s 1-0 loss both teams made it out of the group stage.
According to the Real Madrid striker his home country does belong to the dark-horses to win the title. “We can surprise the others,” said the record goal-scorer of Portugal.
The draw starts at 17:00 later today and Soccer-Laduma will be covering the event with live tweets.
