Cristiano Ronaldo says that legendary Portuguese striker Eusebio should not lose any sleep over the fact that the Real Madrid man passed him on the list of Portugal’s all-time top scorers.
CR7 bettered the ‘Black Pearl’s’ scoring return for Portugal last month, when he scored a hat-trick against Northern Ireland in a dramatic World Cup qualifying win.
He has now scored 43 goals for his country compared to Eusebio’s 41 and will surely become Portugal’s greatest ever scorer by passing Pauleta’s 47-goal haul in the future.
Eusebio has said that his record remains more impressive than Ronaldo’s because he never played against all the small European nations as CR7 has.
But Ronaldo says the 1960s icon is making a mountain out of a mole hill.
“I believe he should not be unhappy, records are there to be beaten,” he said.
“It is simple -- Eusebio will always be Eusebio and Cristiano will always be Cristiano. It is normal that people compare us, but Eusebio should not be unhappy because he will always be up there at the top.
“What I want is to play another 100 games for Portugal, because nobody could be unhappy with that.”
Meanwhile, although they trail Group F leaders, Russia, by one point in the race to qualify automatically for Brazil 2014, skipper Ronaldo is confident that Portugal will win through to the tournament.
“We must win the two games [that remain in their qualifying campaign] and see what Russia do,” he said.
“There are two games left, and if we do not win them, there is no point in thinking about the World Cup.
“I do not believe they will be easy victories, we will have to do everything to win, but we have the better team and we need to show that on the pitch.”
