By the time the season ends, pundits may be heralding Diego Costa and David Villa as the best strike partnership in La Liga. And the Atletico Madrid duo could well be Vicente Del Bosque’s starting attackers when Spain defend their World Cup crown in Brazil next year.
Costa and Villa were to thank for Atleti’s 2-1 win at Granada on Thursday night, which kept them on the heels of league leaders Barcelona, and restored their five point lead over third-place Real Madrid.
Atleti have now won 10 of their 11 games this season, and their one loss away to Espanyol is all the seperates them from Barca.
The tight game was decided by a set of penalties.
Costa converted the first spot kick in the 38th minute, after Villa was brought down in the area. The Brazilian born, soon-to-be Spanish international, is the top scorer in La Liga this season with 12 goals so far.
Villa won and scored the decisive penalty in the 78th minute, and Odion Jude Ighalo scored a consolation goal for Granada seconds before the final whistle.
There is a juicy round of Spanish fixtures to enjoy this weekend, which could see a shake-up at the top of the table.
Barca host city rivals Espanyol in the Catalan derby on Friday night.
Real Madrid take on their plucky but struggling city rivals Rayo Vallecano and are likely to register another resounding victory on Saturday.
And Atleti host Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
