City Book Last 16 Spot

Álvaro Negredo was Manchester City’s star man as the Spanish striker scored a hat-trick to lead his team to a 5-2 win over CSKA Moscow and a place in the last 16 of the Champions League at the Etihad Stadium.

Sergio Aguero gave Manchester City the perfect start when he smashed his spot-kick in the top corner with just 3 minutes on the clock. Winger Zoran Tosic had earlier fouled Spain international David Silva and the referee had no chance but to award the penalty.

The in-form Argentine striker then added a second in the 21st minute when he combined well with Samir Nasri and his effort found the bottom corner to double the hosts lead.

Keisuke Honda did force a save out of City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon with just 25 minutes played but the Japanese striker’s effort from range was comfortably held by the home side’s shot-stopper.

Five minutes later and Álvaro Negredo scored City’s third all but killing off the tie. The Russians were caught on the break and goal scorer Aguero was this time on hand to set-up strike partner Negredo.

CSKA though did manage to reduce the deficit just on the stroke of half-time when Seydou Doumbia after latching onto a Pontus Wernbloom through ball.

Six minutes into the second-half and Toure picked out Samir Nasri with an inch-perfect pass and the midfielder set up Negredo for another simple tap-in from close range.

Doumbia was on hand to grab a second of the game when he was brought down by Gael Clichy, and he stepped up to smash the ball past Pantilimon from the spot-kick.

Negredo then grabbed his hat-trick on the stroke of full-time when he got onto a James Milner cross at the back post to head home and fire City through to the last 16.
