Study Says: Man Utd Overpaid £24m For Di Maria

A study report by the CIES Football Observatory has claimed that Manchester United overpaid by £24 million to get Angel Di Maria.

Di Maria joined United for a British transfer record fee of £59.7 million and CIES say the actual player value is only around £36 million.

The Swiss-based research institute go as far as stating that Europe’s leading club’s have paid 16 percent more for players than they would have five years ago.

The report also states that PSG paid £23 million too much for David Luiz, who joined the French champions for £50 million from Chelsea, and Real Madrid overpaid Monaco by £20 million for World Cup sensation James Rodriguez.

CIES compiled data from Europe’s big five leagues in England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France during the transfer window using what is described on its website as “an exclusive algorithm created on the basis of nearly 1,500 fee paying transfers which have occurred during the previous five years.

“Our new data analysis has revealed that overall, clubs paid on average 16% more than they invested in the five previous years for players with similar characteristics,” CIES said.

“This confirms the ongoing inflation trend of the transfer market at the top end of the football pyramid. The inflation trend is mainly due to the sums spent by a handful of wealthy clubs ready to pay more than a player is worth to get the best talent.”

In contrast, the study says Liverpool made a steal with Mario Balotelli, who is worth £39 million while the Reds only paid £16 million. However, Brendan Rodgers’ side also received £9.5 million too little for Luis Suarez who joined Barcelona for £75 million this summer.

The third most under-valued player was Spain’s Diego Costa, who joined Chelsea for £32 million - £8 million less than he was worth.
