Schalke 04 3 – 0 Steaua Bucuresti: All the goals came in the second-half as the home side made the Romanian champions look ordinary at the Veltins Arena. Goals by Atsuto Uchida in the 67th, new signing Kevin-Prince Boateng in the 78th and German star Julian Draxler five minutes before time rounded off a comfortable victory for Schalke.
Atletico Madrid 3 – 1 Zenit St Petersburg: After a tentative first 40 minutes Atletico did manage to break the deadlock through a Miranda goal. Hulk equalised in the 58th minute but the home side restored their lead when Arda Turan scored in the 64th minute, this was then followed by the Spanish teams’ third scored by Leo in the 80th minute.
Austria Vienna 0 – 1 FC Porto: Porto got their Champions League campaign off to the perfect start with a well-deserved away win in Austria. The home side had no answer to Lucho González’s 55th minute goal. The debutants best chance came when Marko Stankovic was unlucky to see his second-half header hit the post.
AC Milan 2 – 0 Celtic: The Italians will feel that lady luck was on their side on the night as the score-line flattered the home side. Celtic produced a rousing European away display but a late own goal by Emilio Izaguirre and a further effort from Sulley Muntari made sure they would go back to Scotland empty handed.
