Cesc Sinks 10-Man Celtic

Cesc Fabregas struck in the second-half to see Barcelona past a plucky 10-man Celtic in their UEFA Champions League Group H clash in Scotland on Tuesday night.

Fans of the Scottish champions would still have had last season's remarkable 2-1 win over the Spanish champions at Celtic Park fresh in their minds.

The Man of the Match from that outing, Victor Wanyama, who scored the winning header has since moved out to Southampton, but the Scots were again determined at the start of the game.

The hosts enjoyed the first chance of the game with Anthony Stokes finding Georgios Samaras but Victor Valdes was alert to the danger and smothered the opportunity.

Barca were showing patience but clear-cut chances were hard to come by against the organised hosts, with Adriano hitting the side netting in the 25th minute.

Neymar brought things too life with five minutes left in the first period but the Brazilian saw his volley sail just wide off of a cross from Dani Alves.

Xavi then tried to pick out Gerard Pique three minutes later but goalkeeper Fraser Forster was able to scramble the ball clear.

A moment of madness then arrived when Scott Brown was sent off for kicking out unnecessarily on Neymar with 30 minutes left on the clock.

Still Barca struggled to break through though as Cesc Fabregas fired straight at the goalkeeper in the 66th minute before Valdes did well to tip a shot from James Forrest over in the 72nd minute.

Charlie Mulgrew then wasted a glorious opportunity moments later with a free header which he sent wide of the target.

That miss was soon punished as Fabregas met a cross from Adrian and rattled the back of the net with a fine header.

Barca came close to a second in the 88th minute but Forster made two spectacular saves, first keeping out Neymar before getting back to his feet to deny Adriano.

Neymar was determined to get on the scoresheet but Forster was not about to let that happen as he made a sublime diving stop to keep out the Brazilian in the second minute of stoppage time and that proved to be the last real chance as Barca claimed a narrow win.
