Real Madrid centre-back, Sergio Ramos, has rocketed himself into contention for the coveted FIFA Ballon d'Or with his lauded performances of late.
After Ramos scored several decisive goals throughout Real Madrid's Champions League campaign, including the equalizer that pushed the final into extra time, Los Blancos legend, Manolo Sanchís, believes Ramos belongs to the best players in the world.
"I've been saying he's the best centre-back in the world for a long time, even when there are some really great centre-backs," Sanchís told Spanish publication Marca.
"With the progress he has made, he's put himself up there as a candidate for the Ballon d'Or. For me, the fact that he's a defender makes him more worthy of it."
Sanchís also asserted that Ramos' position in the back allows him to be more of a leader than if he played further forward.
"Teams are built from the back. Position on the field is decisive when you have the ability to influence," Sanchís added.
"Sergio influences because he does not only defend, he pushes forward, builds and finishes. He is a complete player and could become a leader from his position, as he is proving to be."
Ramos would be competing against Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo for the prestigious award, after Ronaldo won it last year.
Having scored seven goals for Real Madrid in all competitions this year, Ramos’ cause can only be helped by a successful showing with Spain at the World Cup.
