World Cup Qualifying – Group I
Result: Cameroon 2-1 Togo
Date: 23 March 2013
Venue: Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo
A superb double from Samuel Eto’o saw Cameroon claim a 2-1 victory over Togo in their World Cup qualifier in Yaounde.
The victory will mean a lot to the confidence of the Indomitable Lions who will now be hoping to qualify for their seventh World Cup finals, especially after missing the last two Africa Cup of Nations.
It’s a second victory for Cameroon who move up to six points, while Togo remain at the bottom of Group I with a solitary point.
The love-hate relationship between Emmanuel Adebayor and the Togo national team continued as the Tottenham striker was excluded from the starting XI for the fixture.
The home side dominated the first 20 minutes and were rewarded with the opening goal three minutes before the break when veteran striker Eto’o scored from the penalty spot to give Cameroon a 1-0 lead.
However, on the break of half-time, the teams were again level. It was Free State Stars midfielder Dove Wome who got the leveller for The Sparrow Hawks.
With the match looking destined for a draw, the talismanic Eto’o showed his class and delivered the winner ten minutes before fulltime to give his side all three points.
