Napoli came from a goal down to beat Atalanta 3-1 in their Copa Italia last-16 tie at the the Stadio San Paolo in Naples on Wednesday, thanks to a brace by Jose Callejon and a goal by Lorenzo Insigne.
Napoli produced the first real goal scoring opportunity in the fifth minute when Jose Callejon almost gets on the end of a pass from Goran Pandev inside the Atalanta box, but shot-stopper Ciro Polito caught the ball before it could reach the former Real Madrid player.
Napoli dominated play in midfield and came close once more in the 13th minute when Goran Pandev’s left-footed effort curled just past the upright.
The game then sprung into life with Atalanta breaking the deadlock against the run of play when Giuseppe De Luca taped in from just yards out after Marko Livaja rolls the ball across the face of goal following a break by the visitors.
Rafa Bemitez’s men however produced an immediate response as they equalised a minute later as Jose Callejon volleyed home after a delivery from Anthony Reveillere.
Napoli started the second-half stronger than their opponents and hit the woodwork on the hour mark through a Lorenzo Insigne free-kick which beat Atalanta keeper Ciro Polito but not the crossbar.
Insigne did however put his team ahead soon after and slotted home a close range finish after a defensive mix-up by Cristiano Del Grosso, who was appealing for an offside against substitute Gonzalo Higuain when the goal was scored.
The Argentine striker was in an offside position when the ball was played but the linesman did not raise his flag and the goal stands, 2-1 to Napoli with 71 minutes on the clock.
The Atalanta players are deservedly upset at the decision and defender Mario Yepes is sent off for overly protesting the goal.
Jose Callejon then added his second 10 minutes from time after a brilliant through ball by Inler, to wrap up the win for Benitez’s men and book a place in the Copa Italia quarter-finals against Lazio.
