Augsburg End Bayern's Run

A solitary goal by Sascha Molders was enough to earn Augsburg all three points in a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich and put an end to their 53 game unbeaten run.

Augsburg had the first shot at goal when left-back Matthias Ostrzolek let fly in the second minute, his effort though went just wide and did not trouble Neuer at all.

Bayern dominated the possession early on but the home side did not sit back against the already crowned Bundesliga champions and created a few goal scoring opportunities in the first-half.

The home side then came close to opening the scoring in the 26th minute when Verhaegh’s cross fell to Altintop at the back post but the midfielder shot was well stopped by the Bayern goalkeeper.

Augsburg did break the deadlock on the half-hour mark as Daniel Baier played a wonderful through ball which striker Molders latched onto before doing well to beat Neuer  and give the hosts a shock 1-0 lead.

Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic should have brought the much changed Bayern team on level terms but he could not get his header on target with just a minute played in the second-half.

Neuer was then called into action five minutes later as the German international had to make a fine save from an Esswein shot to keep the score at 1-0 to the hosts.

Pep Guardiola’s continued to dominant in possession as they looked to claw their way back into the game and should have been level in the 68th minute as David Alaba struck the woodwork with his shot after being played in by Mandzukic.

The hosts almost doubled their lead late on as Bobadilla hit the woodwork after Esswein’s cut back, but they did hold on to record a famous victory over the Bavarian giants and end their 53 game unbeaten run.
