Bayern Munich maintained their nine-point lead at the summit of the Bundesliga table with a 2-0 victory over Greuther Furth.
Two Mario Mandzukic goals were all the hosts needed to see off their Bavarian rivals and get the year off to a winning start.
Furth, the league's bottom club, battled bravely throughout the game but were simply outclassed by the table topping outfit set to some under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola next season.
Mandzukic opened the scoring in the 26th minute having gone close on a number of occasions during the opening exchanges.
The Croatian picked up Thomas Muller's volleyed cross and simply beat the keeper from just 10 yards out to break his goal drought.
The goal scorer was in the thick of the action again during the first half but could not convert although he did manage a second after the interval.
With an hour played Mandzukic nodded Toni Kroos' free-kick into the bottom corner of the net to erase any chance of an upset.
Last year’s Bundesliga runners up controlled the remainder of the game with relative ease as they continue their assault on the title.
