Goals from Gerard Pique, Pedro Rodriguez and Alex Sanchez saw Barcelona beat Malaga 3-0 at Camp Nou on Sunday and back to the top of the Spanish La Liga table for the 59th week in a row.
The opening 45 minutes was a half dominated by Barcelona, but for all their possession their finishing in front of goal lacked something to be desired.
Barcelona created their first chance on goal as early as the fifth minute when Alex Sanchez found himself behind the Malaga defence, but his shot from a tight angle clipped the post instead of finding the back of the net.
In the 22nd minute Pedro Rodriguez played Lionel Messi through on goal, but the Malaga keeper was quick off his line and did enough to disturb the forward who saw his chipped effort sail inches wide.
Malaga suffered a bit of setback in the 24th minute when Roque Santa Cruz left the field injured and was replaced by Bartlomiej Pawlowski.
On the half hour mark Malaga managed to create their only decent chance of the half as Pawlowski met a Duda free-kick, but his effort was well-saved by Victor Valdes.
Four minutes later and Barcelona were on the front foot again as Pedro met a cross from the right, but he saw his header cleared off the goalline by Flavio Ferreira.
Finally, Barcelona made their pressure tell in the 40th minute as Gerard Pique tapped home from close range after an Alex Sanchez flick on at the near post, 1-0.
The second 45 saw Barcelona’s finishing in front of goal vastly improve as they doubled their lead ten minutes into the stanza.
Messi played Pedro through on goal who then cut inside from the left flank, beating one defender, before firing into the bottom right-hand corner of the net, 2-0.
Barcelona confirmed victory in the 60th minute after a swift passing move which involved Messi, Pedro and Alex Sanchez concluded with the latter tapping into an empty net from only a couple of yards out, 3-0.
Six minutes later Messi came within inches of his side’s fourth goal when he curled a 24-yard free-kick narrowly wide.
Barcelona took their foot off the pedal thereafter and held on for a comfortable win which sees them on top of the table with 54 points.
