The bulk of Barcelona’s first-team squad has returned for the first day of work after their vacations.
The only missing players were the club’s Spanish internationals, who were on duty at the Confederations Cup and still have a few weeks to put their feet up, and new signing Neymar.
According Barca’s official website, all of Ibrahim Afellay, Carles Puyol, Isaac Cuenca, Jose Pinto, Oier Olazabal, Martin Montoya, Marc Bartra, Javier Mascherano, Adriano, Alex Song, Roberto, Jonathan Dos Santos, Lionel Messi, Christian Tello and Alexis Sanchez have arrived at the club’s Ciutat Esportiva technical centre.
There they will undergo pre-season medical tests and evaluations.
“The players first went through blood and urine tests before an echocardiogram, strength test, foot test, muscle and bone echo graphs a bone densitometer examination and a nutritional check-up,” the Barca website explained, giving an insight into the rigours of pre-season at a top club.
The European summer is well underway and has been scorching of late, and so Tito Vilanova has ordered that for the next few weeks, Barca’s stars will be training in double morning and evening sessions, “in order to avoid the midday heat.”
Barca’s pre-season matches get underway on Saturday, when they face Lechia Gdansk.
They also take on Bayern Munich, Valerenga, Santos and Thailand as they work on their fitness ahead of the defence of their La Liga title, as well as their bid to knock Bayern Munich and former boss Pep Guardiola off their European summit.
