Barcelona’s Dutch legend, Johan Cruyff, must have been spending too much time in Amsterdam’s famous coffee shops.
He thinks that Barcelona should consider selling superstar Lionel Messi.
The same Lionel Messi that many football lovers believe is the greatest player of all time. The same Lionel Messi who has won four Ballon d’Or awards in a row. The same Lionel Messi who has scored 313 goals from 379 appearances for the Blaugrana.
Cruyff says that he would not have sanctioned the purchase of Brazil international forward Neymar had he been in charge of the purse strings at the Camp Nou.
But now that Barca have both attacking talents, he thinks they should consider cashing in on La Pulga Atomica, because he is not convinced the two stars can share Barca’s hallowed turf and limelight.
"No, I wouldn't have signed Neymar. With Neymar on board, I would have planned for the possibility of selling Messi - and some would agree with that, others not,” Cruyff told Marca.
"You are talking about a team, its players, the things around it ... There are too many things at stake. That's why it's so difficult to manage such a top class squad.
"It's like the free kicks. Neymar is very good at taking them, and Messi has already shown he is. Who's going to take them?
"Or the fact that Neymar and Barcelona are with Nike while Leo is with Adidas. These are situations that could cause problems."
Cruyff is obviously aware that his view is extreme, and that there is less chance of Barca selling Lionel Messi that there is of Bafana Bafana winning the next World Cup, let alone qualifying for it.
But he is yet to be convinced that the Messi/Neymar axis will bear fruit for Barca, and not destabilise their squad of champions.
"We'll have to wait and see - it could turn out well or badly, it’s a risk," Cruyff said.
