Baines Fires Toffees To Victory

Leighton Baines was Everton’s hero as his two goals saw them to a 2-1 win over West Brom at Goodison Park on Wednesday.

The England international scored twice before the break as the Toffees looked to be cruising.

However, and goal by Shane Long put them under serious pressure whilst Steven Pienaar had an effort hit the post toward the end of the game.

Everton bossed the opening exchanges as they have done on so many occasions so far this season but didn’t see a real sight of goal until 20 minutes in.

Victor Anichebe almost got himself on the scoresheet although it would have been slightly fortuitious as his fizzing drive took a deflection and went just wide.

The woodwork saved the Baggies minutes later as Anichebe knocked the ball down for Marouane Fellaini who unleashed a rocket that cannoned back off the upright.

The Toffees eventually got a deserved goal through Baines as he uncorked a ferocious shot from just inside the area.

With only moments remaining in the first half Anichebe was fouled in the area and Baines stepped up to claim his second from the spot.

West Brom started the second half like a team looking to get back into the game and they were almost rewarded as the dangerous Romelu Lukaku blazed over.

With 65 minutes gone John Heitinga was the villain as he dallied on his clearance and allowed Long to nip in and score with a header.

With the game back on West Brom came close to a leveller but were denied by the woodwork as Graham Dorran’s free kick connected with the frame of the goal.

Everton endeavoured to make the game safe and almost did as Pienaar hit the bar with a shot, the third effort to be kept out by the woodwork during the game.
