Baggies Complete Double Over Reds

West Brom completed a Premier League double over Liverpool by beating the Reds 2-0 at Anfield on Monday night.

The first real chance came in the 23rd minute when Daniel Agger met a corner from Stewart Downing but the defender saw his header tipped over by Ben Foster.

Downing then warmed the gloves of Foster with a long range strike two minutes later while Steven Reid went close to sticking the ball into his own net just before the break when he turned away Jonjo Shelvey's cutback.

Liverpool continued to enjoy the majority of the possession after the break but they struggled to break down the organised Baggies defence.

Foster was also brilliant when called upon and made a brave block to deny Steven Gerrard just four minutes into the second period.

The stopper then pulled off a great save to keep out Jordan Henderson's flicked before substitute Fabio Borini forced Foster to go full stretch with a sweet strike.

Gerrard couldn't believe that he failed to score with 20 minutes to go as he hit a powerful drive on target from inside the area with Foster going the other way but the stopper put a hand out to deflect the ball away. Borini steamed in for the rebound but hit the side netting.

The Reds skipper would have an even better chance seven minutes later when Luis Suarez earned a soft penalty after Jonas Olsson was adjudged to have pushed him in the back. Gerrard would continue to be frustrated by Foster though as the goalkeeper got down well to make a smart save.

The Baggies felt as though they could snatch a win and Youssuf Mulumbu forced a fantastic save from Pepe Reina before Gareth McAuley thumped a header in off the underside of the crossbar from the resulting corner.

Liverpool pressed forward in search of an equaliser but West Brom substitute Romelu Lukaku looked dangerous on the break and flashed a shot wide after a stunning run before he confirmed the result in the 90th minute when he worked a bit of space before firing in off Reina.

The result lifted the Baggies above Liverpool into eighth place on the league table and dealt a massive blow to the home side's Champions League hopes.
