Goals from Diego Costa and David Villa saw Atletico Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 in a La Liga match at the Estadio Vicente Calderón on Sunday.
The win sees Atletico Madrid keep up the pressure on Barcelona at the top of the table as they sit in second place on 33 points, one behind Barcelona.
For Athletic Bilbao, they sit in fifth place on the table with 20 points.
It was a disappointing showing from Bilbao who produced very little threat in front of goal and saw their night ended on a sour note after they were reduced to ten men following the dismal of Erik Moran.
Atletico Madrid dominated from the outset, but struggled to create chances initially. Still, they persisted and found the opening goal in the 33rd minute.
Juanfran sent a looping cross into the box from the right-hand side which was sent into the air by the Athletic Bilbao defence. It dropped into the path of Villa, who volleyed past Iraizoz with the help of a deflection off San Jose, 1-0.
Madrid then doubled their lead seven minutes later as Costa powered his way past Moran after receiving a pass from Koke and calmly slotted the ball home, 2-0.
The second 45 was more of the same, but Madrid’s finishing was poor as they failed ot add to their goal tally in a comfortable win.
