Atletico Madrid fell further behind Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table after a 3-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
Everything was still to play for at the break as the teams were tied at 0-0, but Mikel San José Domínguez opened the scoring in the second half before goals from Susaeta and Oscar De Marcos secured the win for the hosts.
The first half was very competitive as both sides looked for the opening goal, but neither could get past the goalkeepers, who were in fine form on the night.
Thibaut Courtois made the first great save of the game when he kept out Susaeta's powerful volley that was rifling towards the far corner of the goal.
Gorka Iraizoz then outdid his counterpart when he kept out Emre Belozoglu's attempt with an athletic dive and strong palm.
The hosts finally broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when San Jose directed home a corner kick with a glancing header.
Atletico pushed for an equaliser but paid the price at the other end. Ander Herrera played a through-ball for Susaeta who found the bottom corner of the goal.
Six minutes before the end of 90 minutes De Marcos netted the third as he smashed the ball into the back of the net at the back post after Aduriz's assist.
