Atletico Madrid failed to make the most of Barcelona's slip at Real Madrid as they were held to a goalless draw at Malaga on Sunday night.
Los Rojiblancos had the chance to cut the lead at the top to single figures but their fourth-placed opponents proved to be a tough nut to crack.
Atletico started the game well with Diego Costa, Joan Miranda and Arda Turan all going close in the opening 10 minutes.
Thibaut Courtois was then forced into a simple save in the 10th minute before Turan sent a thunderbolt at goal which the goalkeeper spilled but nobody was on hand to get the rebound.
Malaga ended the first period on a strong note with Vitorino Antunes drilling a shot just wide before Joaquin drew a smart save from Courtois.
Clear chances remained hard to come by after the break as both sides were mostly restricted to long-range effort, most of which were wayward.
Weligton had a chance with 13 minutes to go but he sent his close-range header off target as the game ended in a stalemate.
The result leaves Atletico 11 points behind Barcelona while Malaga remain in fourth place, just a point ahead of Real Betis.
