Atletico Ease Past Sociedad

Atletico Madrid claimed a three point lead at the top of the La Liga table after an impressive 4-0 win over Real Sociedad at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday.

Diego Costa produced a moment of brilliance when he forced the first save of the game from Bravo in the Sociedad goal, the Atletico striker drove past the visitors defence but his top corner bound effort was well saved by the shot-stopper.

Veteran striker David Villa thought he had given his side the lead in the 14th minute and had the ball in the back of the net, but a late offside flag by the linesman meant that the scores remained level for the time being.

The visitors did push forward and their danger man Antoine Griezmann came close in the 23rd minute but his effort was well blocked by the home side’s defence.

David Zurutuza then forced a save from Courtois when he got on the end of a Carlos Vela cross, but the on-loan Chelsea keeper was on hand to save low to his left in the 25th minute.

Diego Simeone’s men then did break the deadlock when Costa squared the ball for his strike partner Villa who made no mistake and slotted home with his left foot in the 38th minute of the game to make it 1-0.

The former Barcelona goal-poacher was then forced to leave the field after picking up an injury and was replaced by Raul Garcia before the half-time interval.

Atletico had to wait until the 72nd minute before doubling their lead, this time the ever dangerous Costa beat the Sociedad offside trap before curling a low shot into the far corner, leaving Bravo with no chance.

It took just two minutes for the home side to make it 3-0 and book their place at the top of the log when Miranda rose highest in the box and headed home.

New signing and second-half substitute Diego then added the fourth and final goal of the game, when he found space in the penalty area before smashing the ball into the roof of the net in the 87th minute.

The win means that Simeone’s men have a three point lead at the top of the table after Barcelona’s shock defeat at the hands of Valencia on Saturday.
